The Silver Scale Invitational is a tarpon fishing tournament held along the Destin-Fort Walton Beach coastline. Anglers compete to land and document tarpon during the event window, with results determined by length, release condition, or points criteria set by tournament rules.

Tarpon (Megalops atlanticus) are a catch-and-release species in Florida and cannot be harvested without a special permit. Despite their popularity as a gamefish, baseline biological data on Gulf tarpon populations remains limited. Migration patterns, spawning behavior, age and growth rates, and habitat use are still not fully understood compared to other major sportfish. Tournaments like this one provide an opportunity to support that research.

Participating anglers are encouraged to report catch data, including location, size estimates, and any tagged fish encountered. Acoustic tagging programs and cooperative tagging studies, including those run through state and regional fisheries agencies, rely heavily on angler-reported recaptures and sightings to track tarpon movement along the Gulf Coast. Every data point collected during this tournament adds to a small but growing dataset on a species that is economically important to coastal communities and ecologically significant as an apex predator in nearshore systems.

 

The tournament includes a Calcutta side competition, with payout structure and entry details outlined separately. A weather contingency date is built into the schedule given the unpredictability of Gulf conditions during tournament season.

 

By combining competitive fishing with citizen science, the Silver Scale Invitational aims to support the long-term health of the tarpon fishery while giving anglers a well-run, competitive event.
